The Fossil Free Freight Challenge 2020 is the innovation competition that can help solve some of the problem with the increase in the e-commerce that leads to an increased need for freight transport and increased CO2 emissions. Five teams have been competing since the beginning of 2020 (read more here) and this week the winner was announced as the final event took place as a live streamed webinar.

Congratulations to the winners

The winner was the consultancy firm Kvadrat and their innovation “The Binary Box” (Binärkartongen). The invention wants to reduce unnecessary packaging material in e-commerce, by better aligning the packaging with the product you have purchased. The idea is that the carton is manufactured directly when needed from the e-commerce company or the TPL company, rather than buying large quantities of cartons that are not suitable for the product.

They win 300.000 SEK and will get support from TripleF to continue the development of the product.

All other contestants shared second place, and each presented their solutions in a webinar on the finishing day of the competition.

Greencarrier’s solution

Greencarrier’s solution in the competition is Door-to-Door on Seaway and as the name gives away, the solution utilizes the underutilized waterways to handle freight volumes in Europe. Sweden and Europe has set the bar high to reduce emissions from transports, and moving goods to the underutilized water ways is a necessary shift in this work.

The solution handles freight and full loads in a regular flow, and provides insight into the profits and other data that provide a good basis for decision-making in order to motivate the customers to take the leap.

Innovation for the future

– It has been a great experience competing in innovation together with the other teams. We have learned from each other within Team Greencarrier and from the competition management and other teams – and it has been a lot of fun. We are happy for our second place, but most of all we are happy to have been able to develop our green offer further. The ideas will continue on as a part of our Green Solutions going forward, says Heléne Lundström, from Greencarrier Freight Services

She has been part of Team Greencarrier together with Johan Jemdahl (CEO Greencarrier Group), Erik Sjöström (Supply Chain Specialist Greencarrier Freight Services) and Åsa Leander (Head of Sustainability & Brand Management Greencarrier Group).

Fossil Free Freight Challenge 2020 is led by RISE and the consortium consists of PostNord AB, DHL Freight Sweden AB, City of Gothenburg, H&M Hennes & Mauritz Sverige AB, Houdini Sportsware AB, Region Jönköping County, Stockholm City and CLOSER at Lindholmen Science Park. The project is funded by the Swedish Transport Administration via Triple F. The competition jury consists of organizations from academia, society and business and among them are H&M.
