Combining studies and real-world experience: A conversation with our working student in Hamburg

Balancing university life with professional experience can be a challenge – but also an incredible opportunity to grow. We spoke with our working student in Hamburg, Anton Von Cornberg, about what it’s like to study and work at Greencarrier, what drives him, and what he’s learned so far.

What does it mean to be a working student?

Being a working student means combining academic studies with practical work experience. I spend three days a week, Monday to Wednesday, working at Greencarrier, and the remaining two days I attend university where I’m studying International Management. It’s the perfect mix of theory and practice and I can immediately apply what I learn at university to real business situations.

Can you tell me a bit about yourself and your background?

I am 23 years old, living in beautiful Hamburg and I’m currently in my fifth semester of a bachelor’s degree in international management. I’ve always been interested in global business and how companies connect across borders. Before joining Greencarrier a little more than two years ago, I did a two and a half year long apprenticeship in logistics which didn’t only show me what I like about the business but also taught me a lot on a personal level, for example what I want to see in a company. I want to work in a company that values growth, innovation, and sustainability, everything you can find at Greencarrier.

Besides work, I am the captain of my football team and love to lead them out on the pitch.

How did you first get in touch with Greencarrier, and what attracted you to the company?

My current supervisor approached me directly based on a recommendation from a mutual friend. Right from the first conversation, I was impressed by the company’s vision and the passion of everyone involved. What really convinced me was that Greencarrier doesn’t just talk about making a difference, but that I could sense that they really want to create something special.  I could also feel the motivation in my daily work from the first day, which confirmed my decision.

What does a typical day look like for you as a dual student here?

No days are the same, and that’s something I really love! I usually start my day by checking emails and following up with carriers and customers. Currently I am working in Sales while also procuring our rates with the carriers. This means daily calls, writing offers to customers, receiving offers, and negotiating them until hopefully everyone is happy. Even though I’m only in the office three days a week, I’m trusted with real responsibilities, which keeps me motivated and challenged.

Which department or team do you work most closely with, and what kind of projects have you been involved in so far?

I’ve had the chance to work in several departments. I’ve been through the whole import and export departments and have now started in sales in October. On top of that, I’ve been taking over our procurement since the beginning of the year, which isn‘t only a privilege as a student but also a great chance to learn something that will help me my whole life. Leading the procurement process means negotiating rates with carriers and ensuring our pricing stays competitive. It’s a big responsibility, but also one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had so far.

That variety has helped me understand the full logistics chain, and I am grateful for this chance to grow in so many ways.

Have you learned anything during your studies that you’ve been able to apply directly at Greencarrier — or vice versa?

Of course! My university courses in international management, economics, and negotiation have helped me better understand the logic behind our pricing strategies and trade processes. At the same time, my practical experience at Greencarrier has given me real-world examples that make my studies much more tangible and less dry. It’s a great combination.

How has working in an international logistics company influenced your view on sustainability and global trade?

It has made me much more aware of the impact logistics has on the environment, but also of how much potential there is for improvement. Seeing how Greencarrier integrates sustainability into its business decisions has shown me that global trade and responsibility can go hand in hand. It’s all about finding smart, long-term solutions.

How would you describe the culture at Greencarrier?

It’s young, dynamic, and full of energy. Everyone is motivated, open-minded, and ready to help each other. You really feel like you are part of a team that wants to achieve something together.

How do you feel Greencarrier supports young professionals or students in their development?

From day one, I’ve felt trusted and encouraged to take initiative. My ideas are valued, and I’ve always had the chance to grow and learn. Even as a student, I’ve been given real projects and responsibilities. This kind of trust is rare, and it’s one of the things I appreciate most about working here.

What would your recommendation be to young students entering the industry?

Be curious and open to everything. Don’t be afraid to take on new challenges or ask questions because that’s how you learn the fastest. And most importantly, find a company that believes in your potential and gives you room to grow. That makes all the difference.

At Greencarrier, we believe in empowering the next generation of logistics professionals by giving them real opportunities to grow, learn, and make an impact. Our working students play an essential role in shaping the future of sustainable logistics – one idea, one project, and one experience at a time.
